Winter Water Safety Tips for Kids (New Guide)

Winter Water Safety Tips for Kids (New Guide)

In the words of basically every character (ever) on Game of Thrones, Winter is Coming. It’s time to prepare for the cold (sometimes) and wet (most of the time) winter season here in Houston. Yes, it’s true, we’ll occasionally get some warm days but most of us are typically taking a break from the water around this time. But if you find yourself brave, here are some safety tips for surviving the winter, whether you choose to stay at home or go on a vacation. Winter Water Safety Tips At Home A large majority of Houston homes have a pool in the backyard. Not to mention, all of the master-planned communities in the greater Houston area are surrounded by lakes, ponds (manmade and natural), and various swimming facilities. With young children home from school during their winter break, it’s important to make sure that they are staying active and busy. It’s equally important to make sure that they are staying safe. It’s always best to have your swimming pool gated off so that your kids will be safe. Having a gate (or some kind of barrier) around your pool reduces the risk of your child having an accidental fall into the pool. It also removes the temptation of trying to get into the pool. A gate 3 to 4 feet high will typically do well in keeping your kids away from the water. A simple Amazon search will lead you to many different options. There are also tarps and nets that can be used to cover your pool. These, of course, can be installed by professional pool companies or builders (for those of us that can afford to be on […]

Thanksgiving is the season to reflect on all the things we are thankful for

Thanksgiving is the season to reflect on all the things we are thankful for

Thanksgiving is one of the most widely celebrated national holidays. What are you thankful for? At Pengu Swim School, we are thankful that each day we get to work with children and families and teach them ways to be safer in and around water. Thanksgiving Holiday Season As you think about all that you are thankful for you may recall time spent watching swim lessons and learning new safety tips for your family. All those skills learned during year-round swimming lessons and summer clinics are helping keep your family safe. Did you know that even turkeys know how to swim? That is right, to ensure their chicks survive, their mothers encourage them to venture into large bodies of water. They tuck their wings in close to their bodies and kick underwater to enable themselves to propel. The importance of swimming is shared through many of the animal species in the world! At Pengu Swim School we provide swimming lessons year-round in a temperature-controlled climate with a toasty 90-degree water temperature. Our goal is to increase water safety awareness, teach invaluable lifesaving skills, and have fun doing so! Keep your family safe even during these cold winter days at one of our three (soon to be four) state of the art locations in the Houston area. And do not forget, if you have family visiting during the holiday season bring them in for open swim and let your little ones show off all those skills! We will see you soon!

Benefits of Swimming as Regular Exercise and Stress Reducer (Updated)

Benefits of Swimming as Regular Exercise and Stress Reducer (Updated)

Why does regular exercise matter? It’s simple. Exercise not only helps us feel better physically but it can also help with something that most people experience daily stress. According to the American Institute for Stress, 77% of people in the United States experience the effects of stress. Let’s Talk About Stress and Benefits of Swimming Stress can have significant effects on a person’s mood, body, and mind. It affects how a person thinks, feels, and navigates their relationships with others. It can also affect their appetite and how they sleep. The reasons people feel stress include job pressure, health, finances, sleep deprivation, and even traffic (Houstonians get this!) among a host of other reasons. Stress in Children Children too can experience stress that will affect their mental health. Feelings of stress in children come from a variety of different sources. These sources can be both internally and externally driven. Children may feel pressure to succeed at school, to fit in with their peers, and to excel at a sport or many sports. Children may also feel stress due to social media trends, family dynamics such as the divorce of parents, and other significant life-changing events such as a move or processing a death in the family. With the rigors of modern-day life, it is likely that stress will exist and have more and more of a negative impact unless proper coping skills are in place. One of the proven and admittedly fun ways of getting ahead of stress is exercise, specifically, a good swim. Swimming Helps Your Mental Health Swimming is a great form of regular exercise that works for different muscle groups simultaneously without placing too much strain on […]

When Can Babies Go Swimming Lessons in A Pool? Babies Swimming Lessons

When Can Babies Go Swimming Lessons in A Pool? Babies Swimming Lessons

We all want our kids to have fun and be safe around the water. If you have a new baby, you may be wondering how soon you can start taking your little one to the pool. Pengu Swim School offers babies swimming lessons beginning as early as four months! An early baby swimming age helps prepare your baby for more formal swimming lessons a little further down the line. At four months, your baby can start to develop skills that will help them when they are older. What Babies Learn   Our babies swimming lessons focus on getting your baby comfortable in the water. Parents are in the pool with their babies and serve as models to show the babies that the pool is fun and safe. We play games, sing songs and do other exercises to keep the babies focus & attention. One advantage to starting lessons before six months is that we can use the baby’s natural reflexes as part of the process. Young babies have a gag reflex that makes them naturally hold their breath for brief periods under water. This means that you can trickle water over their little heads and play splashing games to get them used to the water without scaring them or making them sputter and choke. Why Our Babies Swimming Lessons Are Special Baby swimming age classes have a few specific features to make sure your little one gets the right start. Our water is always warm. Infants can become chilled very quickly, so it is essential that the water is about 90 degrees to keep them comfortable. We have small class sizes limiting the infant class size to a maximum of […]

Why Fall is a Great Time for Swim Lessons

Time for Swim Lessons: With the fall and winter months approaching, many parents are trying to find fun activities to keep their kids busy. There’s visiting the pumpkin patch, scavenger hunts and season-themed arts and crafts. But what many parents don’t realize is that there is a summer activity that is perfect all year-round. Swim lessons! Yes, swim lessons are an activity that can be enjoyed all year. In a city as big as Houston, there is a multitude of indoor pools available for use year-round. Most people think that because the weather is cooling down, fall can’t possibly be an optimal time for swim lessons. But in fact, it’s the complete opposite! With many indoor facilities having temperature-controlled pool areas and heated pools, your child can enjoy lessons in a safe and enjoyable environment. At Pengu, our facility has just that! Our pool is heated to a toasty 90-degrees to keep our swimmers comfortable as they take their swim lesson. Additionally, Pengu offers a state-of-the-art UV sanitation system. This allows us to have a lower chlorine level which helps to reduce its harsh effects on the skin and hair and it’s perfect for babies to swim in too! Great Time for Swim Lessons Swim lessons are also a great way for your child to continue to practice their water safety skills and their technical swimming skills in preparation for the upcoming summer. Why lose the leaps and gains that your child made this summer? Continuing lessons into the fall can help to alleviate the loss of swimming skills over the winter. Many parents look to find a club or league for their children to swim during the fall months, […]

Why Your Child Needs Private Swim Lessons (2021 Update)

Why Your Child Needs Private Swim Lessons (2021 Update)

Private Swim Lessons: The summer months are filled with swimming. Whether it be in your backyard, at the neighborhood pool, or heading out to your local river, lake, or beach. Regardless of where you choose to swim it is important to recognize the benefit of swim lessons. Deciding on the best type of swim lesson for your child is an important part of the process. You could choose to enroll your child in a group class setting or you may opt for private swim lessons. In this post, we’ll focus on the benefits of choosing private swim lessons for your child. Private Swim Lessons So You Can Stay Safe One benefit of private swim lessons is that the lesson is guaranteed to be individualized. A one-on-one swim lesson can allow the instructor to focus and work on the skills that your child needs to develop the most. The instructor can conduct an early assessment of your child’s swimming abilities and adjust the lesson accordingly. The instructor can continually assess and adjust the lesson specifically based on your child’s pace and skill development. Strong Rapport When it comes to swimming lessons it is necessary to build a strong relationship between instructor and swimmer. Aside from teaching students water safety skills, this is our most important focus at Pengu. Relationships can strengthen and grow in a private lesson setting. Once trust and rapport are built the swimmer can gain confidence quicker and easier. This is particularly important when a swimmer is extremely anxious or fearful of the water. A one-on-one connection allows your child to build greater confidence in their abilities because they have a built-in personal cheerleader to motivate them through […]
